Privacy Policy
This policy explains what information ClearMyCode collects, how it is used, and what rights you have. We've written it in plain English — not legalese.
Who We Are
ClearMyCode is an independent OBD-II diagnostic reference website, operated by ClearMyCode as an independent reference site. A business mailing address is available upon written request via privacy@clearmycode.com. For privacy-related inquiries, contact privacy@clearmycode.com.
Data We Collect
ClearMyCode is a statically generated website. We do not run a database of user accounts. The information we collect is limited to:
- Server and CDN logs — when you visit the site, our hosting infrastructure automatically records your IP address, browser user-agent string, the URL you requested, the HTTP status code, and a timestamp. These logs are used solely for security monitoring and debugging and are retained for 30 days before deletion.
- Anonymous web analytics (if enabled) — we may use an analytics service to count page views, measure traffic sources, and understand which content is most useful. See the Cookies section below for more detail. Where analytics are active, we configure them to minimize data collection (no cross-site tracking, IP anonymization or exclusion where available).
- Search queries — if you use the on-site code search, your search string may be processed by our search provider (see Third Parties). We do not associate search queries with identifiable users.
We do not collect names, email addresses, payment information, or account credentials because the site does not have accounts or paid features.
VIN Decoder Privacy
VINs entered into the VIN decoder are decoded in your browser by calling the NHTSA vPIC public API directly. Your VIN is sent to NHTSA (a US government agency) and is not stored, logged, or transmitted to ClearMyCode servers. We have no record of which VINs you look up. NHTSA's own data handling is governed by their privacy policy at nhtsa.gov/privacy-policy.
Cookies
ClearMyCode does not set advertising or tracking cookies. Cookies that may be present are described in the table below.
| Category | Purpose | Duration | Required? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Strictly necessary | CDN security tokens (e.g., Cloudflare challenge cookies). Enables DDoS protection and bot mitigation. | Session / short-lived | Yes |
| Analytics (if enabled) | Anonymous page-view counting and traffic-source measurement. No cross-site tracking or advertising profiling. | Up to 13 months | No |
We do not currently set advertising cookies. If non-essential cookies are added in the future, we will add a consent banner before setting them.
Third Parties
The following third-party services may process technical data (such as IP addresses) in the course of delivering this website. None of these providers receive personal information that we collect directly.
- Cloudflare — CDN, DDoS protection, and DNS. Cloudflare may process your IP address and request metadata to route traffic and detect malicious activity. See cloudflare.com/privacypolicy.
- Hosting provider — the site is served from a static hosting provider. Server-level logs (IP, user-agent, timestamp) may be retained by the host per their own policy.
- Algolia (if search is configured) — on-site code search may be powered by Algolia. Search queries are sent to Algolia's API. Algolia does not receive your identity. See algolia.com/policies/privacy.
- NHTSA vPIC API — VIN lookups are sent directly from your browser to NHTSA. ClearMyCode does not intermediate or log these requests.
Your Rights — California Residents (CCPA)
If you are a California resident, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) as amended by the CPRA gives you the following rights:
- Right to know — you may request what personal information we have collected about you and why.
- Right to delete — you may request deletion of personal information we hold about you.
- Right to opt-out of sale or sharing — we do not sell or share personal information for advertising purposes. No opt-out action is required, but the right is yours and you may confirm it by emailing privacy@clearmycode.com.
- Right to non-discrimination — we will not treat you differently for exercising your privacy rights.
Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information: ClearMyCode does not sell or share personal information. To confirm this or to submit a data request, email privacy@clearmycode.com with "California Privacy Request" in the subject line. We will respond within 45 days.
Your Rights — EEA and UK Residents (GDPR / UK GDPR)
If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, you have the following rights under GDPR / UK GDPR:
- Access — request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
- Rectification — request correction of inaccurate personal data.
- Erasure — request deletion of personal data ("right to be forgotten").
- Portability — receive your personal data in a structured, machine-readable format.
- Restriction — request that we restrict processing of your personal data in certain circumstances.
- Objection — object to processing based on legitimate interests.
- Lodge a complaint — you have the right to lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority (e.g., the ICO in the UK, or your national data protection authority in the EU).
To exercise any of these rights, email privacy@clearmycode.com. We will respond within 30 days.
Data Retention
- Server and CDN logs — retained for up to 30 days, then deleted.
- Analytics data (if enabled) — aggregated metrics are retained indefinitely; individual session data (if any) is subject to the analytics provider's retention policy.
Children
ClearMyCode is not directed to children under the age of 13 (or under 16 for residents of the European Union). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has submitted personal information to us, please contact privacy@clearmycode.com and we will delete it.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy as the site evolves. When we do, we'll update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Material changes will be noted prominently. Continued use of the site after a change constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
